Altar Servers
Altar Servers assist the Priest in the beautiful celebration of the Mass.  They are involved in each part of the Mass from the beginning to the end.  The Priest assumes the role of Christ as he takes the bread and wine during the Consecration of the Mass and changes these elements into the Body and Blood of Christ.  The Altar Servers are the ones who bring the bread and wine to the altar as the priest prepares for the Consecration and they are the ones who are closest to the altar during the entire Mass.  They are actively involved throughout the entire Mass.
Students in grade five and above are trained as Altar Servers. Students are required to attend the Altar Server training sessions that are held each year.  They are required to attend each session.  There are generally six training days, 2:30 to 4:00 PM.  If the group that is training is small, sometimes the number of days are shortened.
Schedules are prepared for three months.  In this time frame, the Altar Servers are generally scheduled for three times, but there are times of the year that they serve a few more times.
Servers request Mass times, however, if too many Servers request the same time, they must be flexible enough to serve at other times.  If a Server cannot serve at a scheduled time, they are required to find a substitute Server.
Each of us is called to serve Christ and His Church, no matter what our age.  To serve at Christ's Altar is a service that is one of the greatest that one can give to God.
Serving the Lord is one the greatest things that any of us can do in our lives.  This is a memory which will last a lifetime and establish a good habit of serving the Church and the community.
