The art program at SHS is based on the Diocesan curriculum guidelines. We strive to, over the course of the 9 years the student may be at SHS, give each student the opportunity to experience art through a wide variety of 2D and 3D media. Lessons also incorporate art history and art criticism as well as often integrating various themes from the class' social studies, science or religion lessons.
Art is an important part of our goal to educate the whole child. One of the school belief statements is: "We believe that every person is a child of God worthy of love, respect, and dignity." At the heart of every lesson in art class is this belief. Each child is encouraged to explore their own ideas, try new things, and approach creative problems in their own unique way. Art class gives the children a place to be successful and be valued for just being themselves. Additionally, the problem-solving skills used in the creative process apply to all learning, no matter the subject area.
Art classes are 50 minutes each week per class. Large classes are split into two groups which have class at separate times. This allows for more individual attention by Mrs. Corvino.
Artsonia is a website offering an online gallery in which the students' artwork can be displayed. The school gallery is organized by project, grade and student and the entire gallery can be viewed by anyone. Each artist also has their own individual gallery in which they can write comments about their work and registered parents and invited friends can also leave comments for them. Artsonia also has an online store where families can purchase a variety of items such as tote bags, magnets, and sketchbooks featuring their child's artwork. Please visit the SHS Artsonia here
Each March, SHS has an exhibit at the downtown Public Library. The entire SHS community has a chance to enjoy the students’ artwork. This event gives SHS great visibility in the community and is also a wonderful opportunity for the students to have their work recognized.
Art classes at SHS are cherished by students and inspire them to continue developing their abilities as creatives. |
