Community Service

The importance of community service is highlighted in the SHS mission and belief statements.  To be a responsible member of society requires awareness, concern and action to make the world a better place.  Schools need to teach and encourage children to participate in their communities.  This can be achieved by providing opportunities for students to participate in community service programs.

There is no formal requirement for community service at SHS, however, seventh and eighth graders are required to fill a number of hours of service in order to receive the sacrament of Confirmation.  Classroom teachers are encouraged to find ways to include service projects for their individual classes.  The Student Council promotes the entire student body to participate in projects adopted by the council (such as the Catholic Worker Winter Clothing Drive).

The ideal outcome of community service is that students will not only develop an awareness of the world around them, but also become emboldened to improve the world and leave it better off because of their imprint.
