The Eco-Initiative is a new effort of SHS in 2011. It seeks to infuse environmental stewardship into the school’s policies, procedures and infrastructure. The Eco-Initiative focuses on recycling, energy usage and discerning new means to lessen our environmental footprint.
The goal of the SHS Eco-Initiative is to enhance our environmental stewardship to our community and to the earth. Ultimately, this initiative is about taking responsibility for SHS’s environmental impact by educating ourselves and caring for the beautiful earth that God has given us.
The Green Team is a Club for the students of SHS. The Green Team’s primary initiatives in 2011-2012 focus on developing a ‘seed to table’ type program, inspired by the work of Alice Waters, by creating raised vegetable gardens in the side yard of the school. While the Green Team focuses on growing and using the vegetables, teachers are able to use the garden as a laboratory to enhance experiential learning of their curriculums with opportunities for learning in science, nutrition, finance, spirituality, math and language arts. In addition to their gardening activities, the Green Team will learn about obtaining, conducting and operationalizing an Energy Audit of the school building in the near future. This year they also organized a 'reclamation station', where they collect items and sort them for reuse and recycling. Go to our Reclamation Station page to find out how and what you can contribute.
