Library Science lessons are taught to all grades on a weekly basis. Students have access to both classic and new literature in the extensive collection at the SHS library. Students complete extensive research for projects. While the library is a place of investigation and digging into different worlds, the library is also viewed by all as a FUN place to go!
Each class is split in half for library so that the student teacher ratio can be as optimal as possible for library. These extra-small groups (of approximately ten students) attend a 50 minute library class on a weekly basis and learn about subjects such as the Dewey Decimal System, MLA citation, Reading Circles, Literature Genres, Library Manners and Research Skills. Mrs. Wolfe, the SHS librarian, presents many of the lessons by reading a book aloud and conducting group discussion. Students are required to check out a minimum of one book each week. Books are use for SSR (sustained silent reading) in their own classrooms, research projects required by classroom teachers, or for leisure. The librarian is present at least three days a week and students are welcome to come to the library outside of their regular library period. The library is often used by older students as a place to study before school and during recess periods.
The small student to librarian ratio allows the SHS librarian to get to know each student personally and assist students in finding books that are just the right fit for each individual. Mrs. Wolfe explains, “When I read a book I make a mental note of each student I know who would enjoy the book!”
Students consider the library a very warm and nurturing spot in the school. Students in grades 5-8 may participate in the “Book Fair” committee which plans, organizes and promotes the annual book fair which partially underwrites the cost of the school library. This committee generates excitement and leadership skill-building and provides momentum for interest in the school library. Student library volunteers are also an integral part of the library as they assist Mrs. Wolfe in cataloging and shelving books while learning the daily operation of a school library. The library at SHS is a cozy nest in which students quietly cultivate their love of learning.
