Physical Education

Physical Education (PE) at SHS teaches students that they have the power to make healthy choices throughout their lives.

The Diocesan Physical Education committee recently completed new curriculum guidelines.  For K- 3 grades it focuses on spatial awareness, movement, and cooperation.  It also teaches about the importance of physical activity.  Mrs. Montgomery teaches these concepts through a variety of activities and instruction.  For the 4- 8th grades, she continues to further enhance the focuses from the younger grades and introduce sports games as well. There are team building activities, as well, and students develop their own fitness goals.

The students have PE once a week. K-2 have 40 minutes of instruction and 3-8 have 50 minutes of instruction. With the larger classes, the students are divided in half in order to improve the teacher-student ratio so that Mrs. Montgomery can better coach each student.  Students wear the PE uniform to school for the entire day on which they have PE so there is no need to change clothing during the school day.

Some of the most popular activities include stations, sports, parachute, Olympic and team building activities.  In the spring, SHS has track and field Olympics and Field Day.  Field Day is typically held during the last week of school at Buchanan Park.  Grades are grouped together in three similarly-sized levels: K-2, 3-5 and 6-8. Each group participates in physical activities that were taught throughout the year.  Field Day is a very celebrated, fun and widely-anticipated event and is dependent upon the help of the classroom teachers as well as parent volunteers.
