SIXTH GRADE CURRICULUM

Religion:
Students embark upon a year of the study of the Old Testament including how the people past and present treat God and others.  In the second half of the year, the sixth graders live out their Godly promises by completing community service including raising money for missions and hosting a tea of the St. John Neumann Grief Support group.

Integrated Language Arts:
Student studies emphasize grammar, spelling, reading, and writing with a particular focus on becoming better writers in all subject areas.  During the first trimester, the students write detailed directions and teach each other how to complete a task they never performed before.  The second trimester brings a lively debate between two students on a topic of their choice as they try to persuade the audience of their peers that their side of the debate is the winning idea.  Finally, in the third trimester, the sixth grade combines technology and language arts class to create trickster books on the computer to read to the younger grades.

Science:
Students are focused on Earth science including earthquakes, continental plates, natural forms of energy, and space.  Every January they also participate in the school's science fair.

Math:
Students study decimals, fractions, and percentages and their use in everyday life.

Social Studies:
Students study world history from ancient civilizations to World War II.
